Turbulence Training Week 9 Day 3

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Note to self: Don’t buy salted cashews. These are like potato chips or some other can’t stop eating them snack. I don’t have trouble with raw walnuts. Raw almonds cause me a little trouble cause they’re so damn good. But I have a terrible time stopping eating cashews.

DB Flat Bench Press 8×20, 8×25, 3×8x30

DB Row 8×25, 2×8x30 (Go heavier next time!)
Elevated Pushup 3×8 each side

6 60/60 intervals on recumbent bike.

Daily Activity

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

I just had to send this email out to everyone in my company.

Who ever left the beans and franks on top of the fridge in the kitchen, I am sorry. I was certain that it was a gag snake thing from the way back machine. I opened the can only to discover that it was indeed beans and franks. I put the can in the fridge.

I apologize sincerely and will replace them if the owner can tell me where to get that particular brand. They appear to be some sort of self heating beans.

Morning
TT Core workout Stage 1 B

Lunch
35 min jog. It may be a jog, but for me it’s pretty intense. My heart rate is in high end for cardio (75%+ of HRM) the entire time.

Turbulence Training Week 9 Day 2

The Farm

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

We finally got cows again. 2 four week old Holstein bull calves to be exact. Bill will have to band them to make ‘em steers. We haven’t had any cows for 2 1/2 years and we’re almost out of beef in the freezer. Unfortunately, it will take at least 18 months to raise these to slaughter weight. We’re gonna run out of beef long before that. Guess we’ll be eating a lot of chicken. Chickens only take 8 weeks to raise.

Turbulence Training Week 9 Day 1

Monday, June 11th, 2007

I’m feeling really good after taking a recovery week. My foot isn’t hurting anymore and I have lots of energy.

Today I started Stage 2 of Turbulence Training for Women. I read on the TTMembers forum that a recumbent isn’t recommended, so I tried the other style of bike. I couldn’t get the resistance to increase on either bike, so I switched to the treadmill for intervals. I’ll have to get one of the employees to help me figure out the bikes. I’ve tried them before and had the same problem. Maybe they’re just broken

TT Warmup

Romanian Deadlift 8×45, 8×65, 3×8x85
DB Flat Bench Press 8×15, 8×20, 3×8x25

DB Row 8×25, 2×8x30
Elevated Pushup 3×8 each side

Intervals
8 60/60 Hills on treadmill.

Weekend Report

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Saturday Bill and I did crazy stuff in the yard. It was fun. We had to keep Sam entertained so he wouldn’t get fussy, but all in all it was a good workout.

We started with a bodyweight warm up of squats, push-ups, split squats and rows with a log.

Front Squat 3×8x50lb sandbag
Bent over Row 3×8x50lb sandbag

Stick drills

Tire drag 2×200 yards w/ 80lb sandbag
Close Grip Pushups 2×10

Stick drills

In between exercises, I walked Sam up and down the driveway to keep him happy.

Extreme Weather

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Wednesday morning it got so cold it frosted here in Northern Michigan. I didn’t pay sufficient attention to the weather reports and we lost all our tomato plants again. I’m not replanting. At this point, I can buy a couple of bushels of tomatoes at the farm market and it will cost me less money. Now, if I had started the plants from seed, I wouldn’t be out so much money. But having a newborn kinda sucks up a lot of free time and we didn’t get to it this year.

OK, I might still plant a few. At least some cherry tomatoes for salads. Oh, and those fancy yellow pears, those are so good too!

The next day it reached 90 degrees. I guess that’s what they mean by extreme weather patterns. Needless to say, the dramatic temperature change resulted in some VERY high winds. The thunderstorm that came in was very powerful and we were with out power for 16 hours.

Bill was funny. He was getting all upset about how somebody needed to get the power fixed soon. Then he realized that he spends a significant amount of time an energy on being “prepared”. Prepared for emergencies, prepared for confrontation, etc. So instead of being upset he started planning what we could do to lessen the impact of the next power outage. One thing for sure, we need a water collection system to catch rain water. If we had lots of livestock we might have been SOL on the water front. We don’t right now, just chickens. But pretty soon we’re going to get calves again. We went and looked at them last Sunday and should get them any day.

Recovery Week

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Got into another pair of my pre-pregnancy jeans this weeks WOOHOO. They fit before, but now they fit and I can wear them in public.

I went to the gym this morning. I was going to do yoga at home, but we had a severe thunderstorm in the night and lost power. Also, I knew we would be taking the intern out to lunch before his return to MIT for the summer so I got my workout in and got to have a shower. I really hate to leave the house without a shower. At least we have one of those percolating coffee pots so I had some coffee before I had to see anyone.

Bill got all excited about working out after his friend Matt came over and told him about all the crazy old school strong man stuff he’s been doing in preparation for his first boxing match. Bill hasn’t worked out much since our martial art club had to close last summer so it’s nice to see him interested again. He bought a couple of sand bags and we’re gonna do some crazy shit in the yard. Sled drags, wood chopping (for real! we were gonna hit a tire with a sledge hammer, but we actually have wood that needs to be split, so that’s what we’re gonna do), sprints, squats with the sand bags, rows with the sand bag. Should be a good time! Maybe some stick drills too. I haven’t done any of those for awhile and they’re great for your grip and forearm strength as well as general conditioning.

Yesterday
1 hour 5 min walk

Today
25 min on the Arc thingy at the Gym. 8 60/60 intervals. This machine was better than the elliptical but not much. I have to agree with Craig Ballantine. Sprints or the bike seem to work best.

Recovery Week

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

During this recovery week, I’m going to try a couple of different cardio machines in the gym on the few days I go. Today, I’ll be walking outside for at least 45 minutes.

Yesterday, I used a different type of Elliptical. I did NOT like this one for intervals. I increased the resistance for the intervals which just made it difficult for me to push the pedal down. Because the way the machine is designed, this just slowed me down. I had trouble getting to a level 8 intensity. That’s why I’m trying things out this week. I’d hate to waste my time when it really mattered. This is an added benefit that I had not considered in taking a lighter week.

No yoga this morning. Instead, I got up and made hamburger buns. Bill and I try to eat a healthy as possible and I have to stay away from all forms of dairy right now. Try finding sandwich rolls without dairy, high fructose corn syrup, trans-fats or a host of other crappy ingredients. We’re having yummy pulled pork sandwiches for dinner tonight! Bill is a fantastic cook (for which I thank my lucky stars everyday) but he’s not much on baking.

Yesterday Morning
1 hour restorative yoga (Tivo’d from the Bringham Young University channel. Who knew they had good commercial free fitness programs?)

Yesterday Lunch
TT Core Workout A
Elliptical 7 60/60 Intervals

Today Lunch
45 min walk outside
1 hour walk outside. Absolutely gorgeous out!

Recovery Week

Monday, June 4th, 2007

I decided to take the recovery week. I’ll do something light everyday, but nothing too strenuous. The top of my right foot has been hurting for about 2 weeks, so I want to let whatever happened to it heal.

Also, we’re teaching Sam to not nurse at night. Which basically involves soothing him every time he wakes up with cuddles and shushes until he falls back asleep. This takes considerably longer than nursing and you can’t give in or he’ll never learn. We started last night and I am TIRED today. Then, I have to wake him up to eat at 5 in order to be able to do any type of exercise in the morning. Not that that is a big deal, we did it anyway. I suppose my body would adjust if we left this feeding out too, but I guess I’ll ease into it. I was very full this morning.

Morning
30 Min Yoga
