Spingtime Gardening

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Saturday we put most of the garden in. We planted
20 tomato plants of varying types
16 jalapeƱos
2 purple bell peppers
2 rows of beans (wax beans, green beans, and an heirloom variety called Black Valentine)
1 hill of watermelon (3 plants)
3 hills of pumpkins (Snack Jack hull-less variety)
12 cabbages (9 green, 3 red)
Of course, I didn’t check the weather. Luckily, Bill’s dad called and told us that it was supposed to get down to 25 that night. Bill covered everything up in the early evening but it look like we still lost about 30% of the tomatoes. We did put the garden in about 2 weeks early, but it has been so warm!

Last year we planted a lot more variety of things, but less of each. For instance, we only planted 9 tomato plants which didn’t really produce enough at any one time to make a canner full of tomatoes. The cauliflower never produced and while the broccoli did, it took up a lot of space for what amounted to one meal of broccoli for each plant. This year I would have liked to plant some brussels sprouts, but we didn’t get around to starting anything from seed (due to having a new baby) and the none of the nurseries had any this year. I hope the pumpkins produce. They have quite a long growing season and I would have normally started them indoors, but I’m crossing my fingers because they do OK in colder weather.

Turbulence Training Week 6 Day 3

Friday, May 11th, 2007

I guess there is a possibility my gym might remain open. Some new owners are looking at it and they don’t want it to be closed for a single day. If something doesn’t happen in the next two days, I’ve found a new gym. They offered me a GREAT deal…$125 for 17 months. It’s not even the gym that called me and told me the Sweat Shop was going out of business. I just walked in and asked what kind of deal would they make me. I hate having things up in the air though!

Turbulence Training Week 6 Day 2

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Yesterday I got a voice mail from some other gym saying my gym was going out of business and they would be honoring my contract. I purchased a year long membership 10 weeks ago. This new gym is at least a mile farther away and my coworkers did not purchase a whole year. Rather they paid by the month. So I’m stuck at a gym not of my choosing for the next 42 fricken weeks and my partners may choose another gym.

Cardio Week 10

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

I’m losing track of what week I’m on! Good thing I have this blog to keep track

Yesterday I didn’t have much time to post…but 15 negative chins! Woot. My entire upper body was pretty sore including my abs.

Lunch
2.9 mile jog. Which totally sucked the whole way. I took several walking breaks on the second half.

Yesterday
Morning
TT Core workout A. I held the planks for 50, then 40 seconds and the side planks for 45 seconds. That is really hard to do when you have a cat that wants some attention rubbing all up in your face.

Lunch

Underhand Seated Row 50, 60, 60
Ball Leg Curls 15 (OUCH)

Today
My hamstrings are kiling me today. My forearms are a little achy too. I hope my grip keeps up with the rest of my strength gains.

Lunch
Outside Sprint Intervals
10 30/90 Intervals + 10 min jogging (have to get back to the office don’t you know)

Planting

Friday, May 4th, 2007

We planted a spicy lettuce mix, a sweet lettuce mix and some basil Tuesday evening. I finally got the pumkin seeds and will be starting them indoors this weekend. We buy a huge box of spring mix every week, so this should be a nice money saver.

Now I just need one of those salad spinners to wash everything. Last year I rinsed the greens several times, but we still ended up with sand in our food a couple of times.

Cardio

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

Morning
15 min static stretching

Lunch
The Hill

The hill is probably a little over a 3 mile run. The first half is slightly uphill and then there is a big hill, then a slightly uphill run through a nice field and then down the big hill and back to the office. It’s a pretty tough run for me. Took 3 walking breaks of about a minute.

The best laid plans

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

So, I had planned to move my ab workouts to the evening so I could study for a Microsoft certification. There is a reason I have exercised in the morning for the past 10 years and that is because I turn into a pumpkin at night. Even lunchtime is not as good as the morning for me, but still…way better than nights. Case in point, today I had to attend an 11:30 meeting (that ran over till 12:15) and a 1:00 teleconference. I barely had time to eat lunch. Why does work always have to get in the way of my life?
