Skirts

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

With temps in the 80s and 90s, I’ve been very interested in skirts. I couldn’t find any that struck my fancy so I made some.

I present Girl Camo…This is a stretchy semi heavy fabric. Not quite as heavy as denim, but close. The pattern and colors are camouflage, but with flowers in there. I called it girl camo. The lady at the fabric store called it garden camo. Whatever, it’s still cute. This skirt required a zipper. I’ve never put in a zipper before (well never and have it look right) and I didn’t have a real zipper foot for the sewing machine. But I managed and the third time was the charm, cause that is how many tries it took to get it right.

This one is a wrap skirt. Bah! Turning those little ties right side out was a HUGE pain. The fabric is a poplin with embroidered flowers and leaves. The wrap thing might not have been such a good idea. I wore it yesterday and during my lunch-time walk I had to get a clip to keep it shut. Didn’t feel the need to be flashing the world my panties.

Knitting has taught me some things about sewing. Like taking your time, practicing techniques and repairing mistakes. Also, you don’t have to get it all done in one sitting. All in all these skirts turned out very well.

Finished The Yucky Socks

Sunday, July 10th, 2005

Definitely not my favorites. But they’re done and I’ve started a new pair for my road sock. I know, I was planning on taking the cardi with me, but the socks call to me.

I don’t know what causes it, starts it or stops it, but wow have I been on a creative binge lately. I’m almost finished with the bulky top down cardigan I started 2 years ago, I finished the ugly socks, I finished Bill’s sweater (Picture and post later. He’s sleeping still) and I’m on a sewing jag, which hardly ever happens.

I’ve got the bug to make skirts. I looked around the stores and couldn’t find anything I really wanted or that fit me well so I decided to make one. Well one led to another and another. Of course, this is only buying the patterns :-) I have one almost done and was inspired to buy material for two more.

So, my point is, where does the desire and energy for this come from? I could hardly motivate myself to pick up my needles three weeks ago and now, I can’t wait to be working on some project or another.

4th in the North

Or “That’s some Redneck shit, Yo!”

OK, it was the 2nd, not the 4th. But holidays start early don’t they?

We ran into some old friends at the grocery store and got invited to a Mud Bog yesterday. At first I was like “Why do I want to go out to a dirty old mud bog?” But B convinced me and I remembered that I usually enjoy myself at events like this. At the very least, it’s kinda fun to see people break their shit.

The dirt at this place was amazing. It was like potting soil. B called it a peat bog. When the trucks ran across the ground would literally ripple.

I wish we had a better camera, but all we had was Bill’s camera phone.

Ribby Cardi

ribbycardisleeve.jpg

I’ve been working on this cardigan since the pattern was published in the fall. I think I reknit most of the first sleeve 3 times. I just kept making silly mistakes, like forgetting how often to do the increases. The sleeves are made Coffee Bean with Warm Tan contrast and the body will be Warm Tan with a Coffee Bean stripe.

I’ve been in a total knitting slump for the last year or so. Not much of it going on. Hopefully starting the blog again will help with my motivation. I’m almost finished with the ugly socks…I’m half way through the toe decreases. When those are finished I think I might make the Cardi my travel project.

I had been reading like a fiend, but lately every book I’ve started has been uninteresting and I’ve left many unfinished. Maybe the lack of interest in books has sparked the knitting bug again. Hard to read and knit, easy to watch TV and knit.
